Reimagining how lessons are created

A simple solution that increased lesson creation and engagement.

Lesson creation increased by 300% in the four months since we released this feature. So many lessons were being created that we created a feature for teachers to submit lessons to our public resource page.

Three of our content creators have reached out to our team directly to express their appreciation for this. One wrote:

Simple fix but it fixed my biggest frustration. I didn’t realize how annoyed I was by the old toolbar.

Another reached out the day of the release to say:

I was about to sign off for the day and my page refreshed, the toolbar was gone and I saw this plus. I went on to spend another hour in the app because I was so excited about it!

Teachers didn’t know what to do in a new lesson because there was a massive amount of grey space with no clear instructions on how to add a card. Now when a user enters a lesson, they are prompted with a dialogue to create their first card.

Problem 1: Grey Void

The old toolbar (see image below) was too large to sit permanently between every card so it would move based on scroll position. This was a huge source of frustration for users. The new Add Card button is small enough to sit static between every card. And by placing all of the card options in a dialogue. The day we released this feature, a super user reached out and said,

I was about to sign off for the day and my page refreshed, the toolbar was gone and I saw this plus. I went on to spend another hour in the app because I was so excited about it!

Problem 2: Jumping toolbar

Additional card types had to be nested inside some of the buttons in the toolbar creating a confusing web of hidden choices [red diamonds = decisions; blue circles = choices]. In the new design an ‘Add’ icon brings up a dialogue with every possible choice presented at once in a dialogue that can scale to accommodate as many card types as we will ever need.
